Daniela Binatti, Co-Founder and CTO at Pismo, was a featured speaker on a Harrington Starr webinar. She talked about her career as a software engineer and the path she followed all the way to co-founding Pismo.

Before launching the firm, Daniela worked for 16 years at one company. She started as a software engineer but worked in several departments like quality assurance (QA), product and operations, and infrastructure. “In my last position, I was in charge of the whole infrastructure at the company,” she says.

After all those years and with two daughters at a young age, she decided to leave the company to do something different. She decided to take some tech courses and was thinking about working as a consultant.

“By the time I left the company, I was looking for something “less critical.” But while I was studying, I realised there was a huge gap between the financial services industry and the others. There was a big opportunity to build something to innovate financial services worldwide. After realising that, we launched Pismo”, she explains.

Leadership x tech position

Daniela explained that since she started working with technology, she pursued to have a leadership role. This willingness came from her family, that always encouraged her to pursue this kind of position. When she was 26, she became a director in the company she worked for.

Although leadership was something that Daniela pursued, she says that launching a company and becoming a CTO was not in her plans. “This was the part I didn’t plan at all. But after doing that, I can say it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. As a CTO, I can kind of ‘work with my hands’ on tech –and that’s the part I love the most – and as a co-founder, I wear different hats, like talking to investors, thinking about the company growth, etc. It’s my best role ever.”

Innovation needs attention

Leading a tech company is not about innovation all the time, Daniela says. Clarity and transparency are essential values to share with the employees, from the hiring process to the day-to-day operation.

“When you are launching a company, it’s innovation. But when you are operating billions of dollars in core banking, as Pismo does, you have to be more careful about what you are doing. Being innovative and simultaneously taking care of critical pressure is vital”, she explains.

Believe in yourself

Thinking about the journey Daniela took until launching Pismo and becoming a CTO, she says one of the biggest lessons she learned was to believe in her strengths.

“As a woman in a male-dominated industry, my biggest lesson was that I’m not less than others. The most difficult obstacles to overcome are those we create in our minds. So you have to believe in yourself. If you work hard and believe you can do something, you really can”.
