Catarina Rivera talks about intersectionality, diversity and inclusion at Pismo

She discussed her perspective as a Latine/x woman with disability and her journey with ableism, intersectionality and inclusion in today’s society

There is an effective way to make real inclusion and diversity possible: learn from different people with different perspectives and life experiences, considering intersectionality – a term that describes how aspects of a person’s social and political identities combine to create different modes of discrimination and privilege.

We know that we have a long journey to go at Pismo, especially because there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Each person and company culture has unique needs, challenges and opportunities.

This International Women’s Month, we invited Catarina Rivera to talk about intersectionality. Catarina steers away from the narrative that usually revolves around one specific group of women, who are white, cisgender, non-disabled, without children and with other privileges.

Catarina is a disability public speaker and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) consultant. She is also the founder of Blindish Latina, a platform smashing disability stigmas through storytelling, advocacy, and education.

As a Latina woman who has lived with disability all her life, she brings a deep understanding of intersectionality to conversations surrounding disability.

Pismo employees had the opportunity to hear Catarina’s journey with a disability, ableism and its societal presence, and her perspective as a woman. Vicky Napolitano, our Belonging lead, hosted the event and added her view as a transgender woman.

And to keep this conversation from happening only once a year, Pismo’s partnership with Catarina Rivera will continue for the next few months, when we will approach ableism, disability, inclusion and the role of leaders in dealing with these topics.

Learning real stories from people of historically marginalised groups, who usually are left out of events like this, is one of the first steps to building a world where everyone feels they belong and are truly included!
