Three key technology trends we observed at AWS re:Invent 2021

It’s hard to explain the sheer scale of AWS re:Invent 2021, the cloud computing conference hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Las Vegas from 28 November to 2 December.

The in-person event gathered nearly 30,000 attendees from across the world, and it also had an online audience. The conference featured keynote announcements, training and certification courses, 1,500 technical sessions, an exhibition, after-hours events, and much more.

I attended AWS re:Invent with Daniela Binatti, Co-Founder and CTO at Pismo. We found many opportunities to meet with partners, peers, and clients and network with new people. Here are three key technology trends that we observed there:

1 – Democratising machine learning

Machine learning in the cloud is already a hot topic – and companies that adopted this technology report encouraging results. But, there are concerns about the scalability and maintainability of these systems. And their integration with other services is sometimes complex. Thus many companies that could benefit from this technology haven’t adopted it yet.

At the AWS re:Invent, we could see that AWS is democratising access to various machine learning tools, algorithms, and strategies. It announced, for example, a visual programming tool for machine learning model creation, SageMaker Canvas, that complements its other services.

So, companies can focus on their businesses while building machine learning applications instead of spending their time and money on the discovery process.

2 – AWS Outposts spread

The announcement that Nasdaq will move its main computer systems to AWS Outposts attracted immediate attention to this product. Outposts, which AWS launched two years ago, are racks filled with turn-key cloud infrastructure. They allow enterprises to deploy hybrid clouds in their on-premises data centres.

AWS Outposts are trending for a good reason: they will be the way to go for companies that need to meet regulatory or low latency requirements that the regular public cloud cannot satisfy.

Outposts allow companies to have an on-premise site while maintaining the same cloud experience they have with the regular AWS services. This product enables companies to create their core networks (like Nasdaq is doing) while being transparent when integrating it with all the other AWS cloud services.

This is a game-changer for companies that want to adopt the public cloud but have specific needs that require on-premises computing.

3 – Use of VPC to fight ransomware

AWS accounts and Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) architecture are among the first things you must think about when using the public cloud. They are essential factors in building a safe and resilient cloud-based system. These two AWS services came under the spotlight at re:Invent because we are seeing an upsurge in ransomware attacks and an increasing demand for high availability.

The VPC architecture can help prevent ransomware attacks or, at least, mitigate or isolate them, limiting their impact to only a subset of users or systems. Many AWS services now support the usage of more advanced techniques of VPC architectures by using transit gateways, global accelerators, private links, and other features.
