Five promising open-source projects every developer should know

After attending Kubecon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2022, Pismo’s Fernando Silva and William Mafra discuss some crucial trends in open-source projects

Pismo

If a developer wants to know the most important trends in open-source and cloud-native projects, Kubecon + CloudNativeCon is the place to be. This massive conference held by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation recently gathered thousands of developers in Valencia, Spain.

Fernando Silva, software architect at Pismo, and William Mafra, our Principal Staff Engineer, were among this geeky crowd. They spent the five days of the event watching panels and project demonstrations and discussing the latest trends in DevOps and cloud technologies.

“It was a great opportunity to see the most important global players showing their solutions to solve real problems. We could learn how to bring these solutions to our reality”, says Fernando Silva.

Based on what they learned during Kubecon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2022, Silva and Mafra listed five open-source projects that every developer should know.

Argo

This open-source toolset for GitOps is gaining popularity worldwide. Many companies have been adopting the Argo stack to solve their problems. The most popular tools in the set are Argo Workflows (an open-source container-native workflow engine for orchestrating parallel jobs on Kubernetes) and Argo CD (a declarative, GitOps continuous delivery tool for Kubernetes used by Pismo).

Opentelemetry

A collection of tools, APIs, and software development kits (SDKs), Opentelemetry’s primary function is to make the observability stack standardised. It offers vendor-agnostic or vendor-neutral APIs, SDKs, and other tools for collecting telemetry data from cloud-native applications and their supporting infrastructure to understand their performance and health.

Kubecost

Silva got quite excited about Kubecost, a tool to manage operational costs in Kubernetes. Kubecost provides real-time cost visibility and insights for teams using Kubernetes, detailing costs by application or tags. It’s an excellent tool for mapping high-cost points. It also analyses everything spent and shows tips on where to improve.

Openshift

It’s an enterprise-ready Kubernetes container platform built for an open hybrid cloud strategy. It provides an application platform to manage hybrid cloud, multi-cloud, and edge deployments, enabling a cloud-like experience everywhere it’s deployed.

VMware Tanzu

Like Openshift, VMware Tanzu focuses on integrating different public clouds (AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.), making the deployment of Kubernetes clusters across them easier and providing integration between them. It also facilitates the setup of some services, like Istio (an open-source service mesh that Pismo and other companies use to connect microservices).
